Gold Award - Timber Frame Home Located in Virginia

Stiffler rearThis mountain top retreat sits high above the city of Charlottesville, with dramatic views across the Virginia countryside. The timber framed entry porch is raised up on a stone foundation, with a king post truss at the top of the gable to show its construction. The home’s rustic appearance is enhanced by its red cedar shingle siding and cedar shake roof. Once through the front door one enters under a loft with a stair on the right. The cathedral timber framed great room is straight ahead; to the left is the master bedroom suite, and to the right the kitchen and dining area.

The kitchen is on the entry side of the wing, with a porcelain country sink under the window. It has cherry flat paneled cabinets and soapstone counters. The island has two ovens and an eating area, while the range is against the wall with overhead exhaust. Because the kitchen faces the dining area, and has light from the window over the sink and is shaped like an alcove, it feels like an extension of the dining area and not a separate room.

Stiffler kitchenBeyond the dining area is a screened in porch, which provides a three-season retreat from the outside complete with a stone fireplace. On the left side is the master bedroom suite, with its own balcony, walk in closets and five-fixture bath. Upstairs is a central loft area that overlooks the great room. The iron balustrade opens the loft up to the great room, and the central part extends out in a gentle curve with custom brackets on the structural joists. A special touch is the window seat at the head of the stairs, which provides a place to sit, read and see who is coming in the front door. Matching bedrooms with their own attached bath under a shed dormer are on either side of the loft, giving them privacy as well as views out the back.

The basement level has a guestroom suite with a private patio for guests and family visitors. The central walkout area is a family room, and there is also room for an office and additional bathroom. This house drops down the side of the mountain, so every living space has windows and access to the sweeping views. The wrap around porch is relatively shallow, so the basement rooms are not in perpetual shadow. All in all, a rustic, but very high quality mountain retreat for a busy Virginia family.
