Gold Award - Timber Frame Home Located in Virginia

Regan frontThis unusual house looks northern Italian, but is actually set in Virginia. The owners love Tuscany, and wanted to reproduce its charm. The expansive hipped roof and stucco and cultured stone on the exterior refer to Tuscan farmhouses. The covered timber framed entry and arched windows with stone tops, especially the second floor loft window, add to the feel. The arched top front door leads into the timber framed entry area under a loft, with the pine frame lightly stained for an antique look. To the left is the kitchen with an arched door opening into the “boot room”
used by the wife, who is an avid gardener.

The cathedral great room is wide open and dominated by an extensive window wall looking out the back.  On the right is a fireplace with stone surround and elaborate classical mantel, plus a European style plastered tapered chimney. Tinted plaster, an iron chandelier plus the arched windows facing south all continue the theme. A small window seat tucked beyond the fireplace is a special touch.

Regan kitchenThe kitchen is equally special. Down a hallway from the entry, it has a custom plate rack and its own fireplace, with a smaller stone surround, and a large island with a stone country sink. But the highlight is the cooking hearth, set in an arched niche with dual-fuel range, extra oven and microwave. The pastry faucet is perfect for pasta, and as in a real chef’s kitchen, the pots are hung overhead within easy reach. The separate workshop and studio building, in the same style, is visible from the corner of the kitchen. A seven foot arched opening, with a lighted niche for artwork, leads into a versatile room with built in bookshelves and space for art. Used mostly as a “library,” it has a table that can be expanded for formal dining when needed.

The right side of the house consists of the master bedroom, with a large sitting area. The master bath has a custom shower and two sinks, and is accessible from both the sleeping area in the front of the house and the sitting area in the back. Finally, there is a loft upstairs with a couch in the dormer over the front entry. This house is unusual in having lots of custom European touches, but all the advantages of modern living. The basement could be finished for more bedrooms, if needed, but as it is it offers elegant one-story living with a Tuscan flair.
